Frequently Asked Questions: For Staff (non-academic) and Librarian Positions

How do I find out what jobs are available?

For Web (internet) access:

Disability Accommodation Available for Applicants

  • I understand that if I require an accommodation for a disability so that I may participate in the selection process I am encouraged to contact Cornell University's Office of Workforce Policy and Labor Relations. That office can be reached at voice (607) 254-7232, or via fax at (607) 255-0298 or email at equalopportunity@cornell.edu .

What Web browsers are supported?

How long are jobs advertised?

  • Each position is advertised on-line for a minimum of 5 business days and may be posted longer.
  • Some positions will include a deadline in the posting and others will not.
  • Please note that positions are posted as they become available and can appear on-line anytime. It is recommended that you check on-line regularly for postings (at least once a week).

How do I apply?

  • For Staff (non-academic) and Librarian, or Bargaining Unit (union-represented) positions, it is required that you apply on-line.
  • For more information regarding the application process for our Staff (non-academic) and Librarian positions please visit www.ohr.cornell.edu/jobs/apply/helpfulHints.
  • For Faculty or County Cooperative Extension positions follow the application instructions contained within the ad.

How will my materials be formatted?

  • The system will not hold all of your formatting, for example, bold and italicized text, as well as some bullets may convert to a combination of characters. However, individuals evaluating your candidacy for the position understand that this is not a reflection on you, and will be evaluating you based on your skills and qualifications for the position.
  • If you prefer, you can save a copy of your resume as a "Text Only" file, and use this version to paste into the application. This option will limit the conversion issue with bulleted lists.
  • Depending upon the position, you may be contacted, after the initial screening, for documents that would reflect upon your formatting skills.

Should I attach my resume or paste it into the position I am applying for?

  • For each application, you are required to paste your resume in the resume box.
  • The attach feature is optional. There are system limitations with the attach feature that you should consider:
    • Once a file is attached, you are unable to edit, delete or replace that file.
    • Attached files are seen for all applications.
    • You are limited to five attachments.

If I apply on-line, do I also send a hard (paper) copy?

  • This is not necessary. In some cases you may be contacted to submit hard copy documents that would reflect upon your formatting skills.

Job structure and recruiting ranges for staff (nonacademic) positions.

  • Cornell's Staff (non-academic) jobs positions are classified within functional job families. Each job family has job title classifications placed into bands according to responsibilities, required qualifications, and competitive market pay. Each classification is associated with a recommended competitive market recruiting range, that may be adjusted based upon internal considerations and candidate qualifications. If a Recruiting Range is not included with the posting, general pay information can be found at www.ohr.cornell.edu/comp/payMinimums.

What does "Overtime Status" mean?

  • Cornell University employees are covered by the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA). Generally, all employees are protected by the FLSA and covered by its overtime and record-keeping requirments unless "exempted" under specific sections of the statute.
  • Those that are not covered are termed "Exempt" from legally-required overtime and other pay requirements.
  • Those positions that are covered by the FLSA are considered as "Non-exempt" meaning that overtime and other legal requirements apply to them.

Why don't I receive notifications about jobs anymore?

  • If you haven't updated your account in the past three months you will no longer receive the job posting notifications.
  • To reactivate your account, visit www.ohr.cornell.edu/jobs, select the Staff (nonacademic) and Librarian positions link, and on the right-hand side of the page select "Access My Profile".
